In recent years it has been found to be one of the primary causes for premature deaths from lung cancer, emphysema and even heart disease. If you don’t care about yourself, at least think about your family!

Smoking related illnesses cause premature death all the time, families are affected by this, it is not only about the fact a smoker has taken their own life in their hands, they have also impacted on the lives of their children, family and friends.

In the bigger scheme of things, eight years may not seem like a great amount of time, but next time you light up, think about your children and the impact your smoking may have on them. Smoking has very far reaching consequences, just like many habits that are bad for you.

Have you ever stopped to question why non-smokers are so vociferous about people who smoke in public. It is because second hand-smoke does affect other people, although this is a highly charged subject. In as much as a smoker has the right to smoke the non-smoker also has the right not to be subjected to second hand smoke if they so choose. These factors are still being debated but the evidence regarding second hand smoke is mounting.

If you smoke when you are pregnant, it has been proven that these babies will be low birth weight and that it is also harmful to the child if the mother is breastfeeding. The same babies do not develop properly and are often not as tall as they should be. Evidence has also pointed to the fact that “smoking” babies reading and social adjustment development is not up to par.

Evidence gathered regarding babies whose mothers smoked during pregnancy, points to low birth weights, growth retardation to some degree and 50% higher infant mortality rates. Reading and social development may be behind the norm, and babies whose mothers smoked when they were pregnant, often grow up to be smokers.

The impact of smoking affects many areas of life even the environment. As it takes one cigarette filter or stub five years to degrade. What happens to the all the stubs of the discarded cigarettes of smokers?

It takes up to five years to biodegrade, and unfortunately, although a smoker would probably not normally litter, they will still throw down a cigarette end in a public place. You might think, what does one butt matter? However the world consumption of cigarettes is 6, 050, 000, 000, 000 per annum. Imagine every one who smokes and the implications to the environment!
